"The Idle Suite are a six
piece improv-rock band with the ability to shift between melody and dissonance,
quiet and loud, and all points in between. On their album “Up Two Sticks Road”,
the band have produced some excellent music that rattles around the room with a
vibrant and cohesive presence. Songs such as “We Are The Urns From Undr” display
a structured approach that is offset by the improvisation within that structure,
the guitars being particularly fluid. Elsewhere the band go for a quieter more
drone influenced approach, the psychedelic “ There Is No Such Place” being a
fine example of this facet of the bands sound. On “Sphyma Zygaena” they offer
free-form chaos and rhythmic enchantment, before “Forcefield” allows all this
elements to blend into a perfect sphere of sound as the band lead us through 23
minutes of sonic ecstasy."
The Idle Suite are a six
piece improv-rock group from Wellington, New Zealand.
The band members come together from a variety NZ underground acts including
Sferic Experiment, MarineVille, The Stumps, Dress, Sandoz Lab Technicians, King
Loser, Cloudboy and Bad Statistics.

Driven by two drummers, The Idle Suite's music is open-ended improvised rock. At
times the band is content to sit on one note, at others burst into dissonance or
evolve melodies. Some tracks bear the influence of the band members background
in making 'song' based music.
The bands line-up is Greg Cairns (drums), James Kirk (drums), David Hall
(guitar, bass), Mark Williams (guitar), Kristen Wineera (keyboards), Johannes
Contag (keyboard/sampler) with guests Bevan Smith (guitar), and Andrew Wright
(keyboard).
In 2005 the bands practice room was demolished and by necessity this has led to
an increasing number of gigs. The Idle Suite are now interested in touring
outside of New Zealand. Live recordings have been made towards their next
release.
